The straight answer is no. Your child doesn’t need to have held an air rifle, visited a shooting range or know anything about the sport. You don’t need any experience either.
At Align Shooting, introducing complete beginners is what we specialise in. All your child needs to bring is curiosity, a willingness to listen and an interest in trying something new. We provide the equipment, instruction and encouragement to help them get started.
That first session could be the beginning of an enjoyable new hobby, a sporting ambition or simply the discovery that learning something unfamiliar can be tremendously satisfying.
A fresh start is a good start
After nearly 30 years of coaching juniors, I’ve had plenty of opportunities to refine how we introduce young people to target shooting. One thing I’ve learned is that starting with no experience can be an advantage.
Beginners arrive without established habits. We can introduce safe handling, a comfortable position and a consistent shooting routine from the outset, giving each student a foundation to build on.
There’s no expectation that your child will arrive knowing the terminology or understanding how the equipment works. Explaining those things is our job.
We explain, demonstrate and then give them the opportunity to try, with guidance along the way. Questions are welcome, and getting something wrong is part of learning. What matters is listening, following the safety rules and being willing to have another go.
What if my child has already tried shooting?
They’re welcome too.
Perhaps they’ve had a go through Scouts, Guides or cadets, visited a club, or tried shooting with a family member. That experience gives us a starting point for understanding what they already know and what they would like to develop.
There are many shooting disciplines, and the experience available at one club can be quite different from another. Equipment, targets, distances and approaches to teaching all vary. Previous experience may therefore look quite different from what we do in our classes.
We take time to see what each student brings. From there, we can build on their strengths and help them adjust anything that will support their progress in 10m air rifle.
Why do we start with 10m air rifle?
We believe 10m air rifle is an excellent introduction to target shooting because it gives beginners a clear, manageable setting in which to learn the fundamentals.
The target is a fixed distance away, and students can see the results of their efforts. With suitable equipment and support, they can begin developing a routine and understanding how small improvements influence consistency.
Our adapted rifles, rifle rests and height-adjustable tables help us accommodate younger beginners. Students can concentrate on learning with equipment arranged to suit them.
There’s plenty of variety too. We use paper targets, metal reactive targets, games and shooting challenges to give practice a purpose and keep young people engaged.
A first achievement might be following a routine with fewer reminders or producing a more consistent group of shots. Those moments give children something tangible to feel proud of.
Good foundations create opportunities
For students who discover an appetite for competition, there is a pathway to explore.
Our coaching can support progression from club-level shooting to county and regional competition, and provide a foundation for working towards National Squad selection. Selection takes sustained development and commitment, but students with those ambitions can begin building towards them in our classes.
One of the most encouraging pieces of feedback I’ve received has come from GB Squad coaches. They have complimented our coaching approach, observing that students selected from our programme arrive with foundations they can build on, without first having to undo established habits.
That means a great deal to me. It reflects the care we put into teaching beginners well, long before anyone is thinking about higher-level competition.
How far your child goes is their choice
A pathway is an opportunity, and each student can decide whether they want to follow it.
I started shooting as a young child, enjoying the activity in my back garden. What drew me in was the pleasure of taking part and the satisfaction of improving. That enjoyment is still at the heart of what I want our students to experience.
Some children love having a personal goal to work towards. Others enjoy the company, the concentration or the challenge of trying to improve on their previous session. Some will eventually want to test themselves in competition.
There is room for all of them.
Target shooting can become a lifelong hobby, a competitive pastime or, for a few, an elite sporting challenge. Every one of those routes begins with finding something you enjoy enough to want to do again.
What happens when we join?
Every new student begins with a Taster Class. We introduce range safety and responsible rifle handling, get to know your child and guide them through their first experience of our teaching approach.
Parents are welcome to stay and watch. You can meet the instructors, see how the class works and ask questions without needing to know anything about the sport beforehand.
Our group coaching gives students the chance to learn alongside others while progressing at their own pace. Instructors help them recognise what’s going well and understand what to work on next.
Whether your child is a complete beginner or already has some experience, we’ll meet them at their starting point and help them develop from there.
If they’re curious, we’d love to welcome you both.
